Review:
There are few things less exciting as played-out, lame, over-done songs. You know how it is: when was the last time you went crazy when you heard The Macarena or Mambo Number 5?Unfortunately, the same sort of mundane music sometimes makes its way into the Christian and Catholic music scenes. So many artists have "revamped" old-school praise and worship songs like Awesome God and Let the River Flow that, sometimes, we get completely bored with the songs and miss the opportunity of true praise.
This is not the case with Critical Mass' new album, Celebrate. A live praise and worship album, Celebrate invites the listener to enter into deep, enthusiastic worship using songs that, while far from innovative, touch the soul. One of the things that is obvious when listening to or speaking with the members of Critical Mass is their complete love of Our Lord. This enthusiasm permeates Celebrate, which could've been a real flop had they not had this enthusiasm. With Celebrate Critical Mass takes a tremendous chance: they cover a bunch of songs that people have heard a hundred times. However, rather than just playing the songs in the sort of bland way that they're often performed in, Critical Mass rock them out, complete with guitar-solos, crazy drum riffs, Catholic-moshing (a weird blend of jumping up and down, hands raised to God, while chanting "We love Jesus, yes we do. We love Jesus how about you?").
From Open the Eyes of My Heart[i] to [i]Cry the Gospel, Critical Mass breathes life into a 12 straight-up Catholic worship songs; however, it is one song in particular that had me jumping up and down like the Catholic dork I am. It's their version of Awesome God. One of my roommates who is not a practicing Catholic walked by my room when I was listening to it and stopped and said "Dude, I know that song. But this one sounds so much cooler. I wish my Church had rocked out like these cats!" In my opinion, this song is worth the price of the CD.
There's not much else I can say about this awesome CD. It is a welcome reminder of the sort of praise and worship we are meant for. You will know the songs, you will know their lyrics; however, you will undoubtedly know that you've never entered into a more thorough, filial time of worship in your life.
