Abridged from The Catholic Register (circ. 30,000)
Modern rock with a spiritual edge. That's the best way to describe the Kitchener-Waterloo band Critical Mass and its music, which emanates from the heart and a sincere devotion to God. The lyrics express the daily struggles that all people suffer such as doubt or fear of the unknown, but touch on a positive note as well, that strength is found in turning to God for direction. The new CD, Faith Looks Up, will appeal to young audiences especially, for the songs possess a modern rock sound typical of college bands today. The upbeat guitar rhythms are enhanced by strong vocals and complementary harmonies, offered in such tunes as the title track, "Wisdom" and "In the Meantime". The breathtaking "Body and Blood" and chorale essence of "Save Me" carry the listener away into a peaceful calm. The seven-song CD is dedicated to the memory of Mother Teresa who, as the dedication states, "was a living example of the Gospel of Jesus Christ. To love at all times. To love at all cost". All the songs focus on this theme of love and the Gospel by emphasizing the important role God has in everyday life. "I'll be Fine" is an example of this relationship as it draws attention to the fact that life is not about "Going through the motions/Believing every notion" but of coming to the realization that "... You've been with me all the time/Even when I thought everything about me was mine". It's becoming aware that no one is alone in the world. Paula Antonello |
